Hypothyroidism Diet

Hypothyroidism is a disease caused when the thyroid gland produces insufficient thyroid hormones. Iodine deficiency is the main cause of hypothyroidism. People with hypothyroidism should watch what they eat. There are certain goitrogenic foods that interfere with thyroid function.

Foods which should be avoided are:
Highly processed and refined foods like white breads, white flours, white sugar, junk foods(chips, deep fried snacks, sweets).

Vegetables to be avoided in their raw form(they can be taken in moderation):
Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, turnips, sweet potatoes

Other products to be avoided:
Soy, peanuts, strawberries, peaches, millet, starchy food

What can you have?
Natural foods, lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, parsley, nuts, winter squash, low fat proteins, pineapples, grapes, grapefruit

Exercising everyday for 30 minutes is beneficial for hypothyroidism.

I found your blog very informative. Many Indians who are deficient in vitamin B12 due to a vegetarian diet have high TSH levels too which is wrongly interpreted as hypothyroidism (esp in the US) and prescribed thyroid pills. Vitamin B12 deficiency produces similar symptoms like hypothyroidism. It would be helpful for any hypothyroidism patient to ensure that he/she does not have vitamin deficiencies before starting thyroid pills.
